Helsinki-Uusimaa participating in Climate-KIC Programme
The Helsinki-Uusimaa Region is participating
in the Climate-KIC – a climate change programme organized by the European
Union. It is an innovation network administered by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology. It promotes both climate change mitigation and adaptation, and its most important aim is to create innovation partnerships where public administration, research, business and education meet each other.
In Helsinki-Uusimaa, the Regional Council, Aalto University and the City of Helsinki are the coordinators of the Climate-KIC activities. The Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences, Green Net Finland, the Finnish Environment Institute and the Helsinki Region Environmental Services Authority HSY are among the Finnish partners. The Climate-KIC Programme provides the activities with funding.
With the participation in the programme the Region wants
to be a pioneer in creating and using low-carbon innovations. Furthermore,
Helsinki-Uusimaa aims at becoming carbon neutral by the year of 2050. Both
objectives are included in the Helsinki-Uusimaa Regional Programme, which sets
out the long term objectives and the directions of development for the region.
Multiple activities within the programme
The Region participates in several Climate-KIC activities regarding innovation, entrepreneurship and education.With this participation, the region wants to be a pioneer in creating and using low-carbon innovations. Furthermore, Helsinki-Uusimaa aims at becoming carbon neutral by the year of 2050. Both objectives are included in the Helsinki-Uusimaa Regional Programme which sets out the long term objectives and the directions of development for the region.
One-month work placements for climate professionals will
be organized in the autumn 2016 by the Helsinki-Uusimaa Region within the Pioneers
into Practice professional mobility programme. Pre- and postplacement training will be
offered for changing your thinking style, along with team work in small groups
for finding solutions to climate changes.

It is possible for the Helsinki-Uusimaa Regional Council along with its partners to take part in the Climate-KIC Projects. The projects vary all the way from a multi-year flagship project and demonstration projects to shorter innovative and pilot projects. The projects aim to find markets for new innovations promoting both climate change mitigation and adaptation, and to promote any implementation of these innovations.Climate-KIC also offers business support for climate start-ups and makes it possible to participate in the cleantech business idea competition ClimateLaunchpad and a start-up Acceleration programme. In addition, the professionals from Helsinki-Uusimaa can take part in various courses and trainings in the Climate-KIC regions.
